The Returned (and a Giveaway!)

The Returned

Harold and Lucille Hargrave’s lives have been both joyful and sorrowful in the decades since their only son, Jacob, died tragically at his eighth birthday party in 1966. In their old age they’ve settled comfortably into life without him, their wounds tempered through the grace of time…. Until one day Jacob mysteriously appears on their doorstep—flesh and blood, their sweet, precocious child, still eight years old.

Quietly disturbing, Jason Mott’s The Returned is a simple tale of the world turned upside down when the dead return to the world of the living.  The central story revolves around Harold and Lucille and the return of their dead child, Jacob, but is it really him?  Are the Returned people or ghosts?  As the Returned flood the earth, panic ensues leaving one wondering who the real monsters are – the living or the dead?

Despite the topic, The Returned is not a horror story but a study of humanity and what it means to be human.  By turns moving and depressing, the story quickly sucked me into its topsy-turvy world.  While there is a lot I would like to say, I don’t want to give away the ending (although you may want a tissue).  It’s a beautiful story that celebrates the gift of life and the importance of making the most of it.

The Returned is, also, being turned into a TV show.  The book has been optioned by Plan B, Brad Pitt’s production company, and will air on ABC as Resurrection.  (See the trailer here.)  It looks a little different than the book, but I can’t wait to watch the show.

  1. I heard great things about this. I can’t wait for the tv show to come out. I love book to tv adaptations.

  2. “a study of humanity and what it means to be human” – books that dive into that theme always give me a great deal to think about.

Thanks for being on the tour. I’m featuring your review on TLC’s Facebook page today.
