Downton Abbey, the British TV drama, is packed with gorgeous costumes and envious locations, which makes this show a must watch for me even though it resides in soap opera territory. A few weeks ago, I posted looks inspired by Series 1 and 2, so now, let’s get inspired by Series 3 and 4. We are in the middle of Series 4 in the U.S., but if you don’t follow the show, there is still time to catch up. The first three seasons are available on Amazon Prime.
This series covers the years 1920 and 1921 at Downton Abbey, and weddings bells are ringing. Unfortunately, this series is defined by the loss of favorite characters. However, Lady Mary looks stunning on her wedding day, and even Lady Edith is given a brief moment to shine. Dresses are becoming quite shapeless but that doesn’t mean simple.
This series picks up six months later and goes until the middle of 1923. While Lady Mary makes mourning look Vogue-worthy, it’s Lady Edith who is experimenting with latest fashion. The Roaring Twenties look is slowly taking shape. Shoulders and ankles are more exposed, and dresses look less restricting. Jazz and night clubs are seeping into society and influence the fashion of free spirits such as Lady Rose.
