Not that long ago, the Olympics were a Big Deal in my house. The world practically stopped spinning while my family crowded around the TV. The first Olympics I remember watching was in the winter of 1994. As the years went by, there were purchases of team apparel and special edition magazines and pins and whole days planned around the events I wanted to watch. But, life happens and things that were once magical are eventually cast in shadow. The pursuit of Olympic glory is not cheap nor is it lasting. And, while I lack the enthusiasm I had when I watched Tara Lipinski or even Sarah Hughes win gold, I am looking forward to seeing some old, familiar faces on TV.
For your viewing pleasure, here are some movies to get you in the Olympic spirit.
You can keep your Ice Princess and The Cutting Edge. There’s only one movie that captures the spirit of competitive figure skating and that is Blades of Glory. The movie is so ridiculous it somehow hits on the truth of a sport so beautiful it’s ugly.
I imagine this movie is the Ice Princess of the hockey world, but I don’t play hockey, so I find this movie entertaining. Plus, D2 is about teamwork and good sportsmanship and Emilio Estevez. But, if that’s not your thing, you could go watch Miracle.
This movie is THE Olympic movie for me. While the movie takes liberties with the truth, it is still a great story. And, yes, there is a Jamaican bobsled team this year.
