Inspired by The Great Gatsby

If there’s a movie that sums up the end of summer, it has to be Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby, with decadence and tragedy going head to head in a swirl of champagne and sequins. Okay, I’ve never experienced a summer quite like that, but in my head, the end of summer is like a grand, Gatsby-style party that suddenly stops. Whether you are looking forward to crisp, autumn days or are enjoying the blazing, summer sun, sequins are always in style, so why not indulge?

Deck yourself in rhinestones with this look inspired by The Great Gatsby.

Miuccia Prada designed many of the dresses for the film, but, thankfully, you can find sweet, flapper dresses at a friendlier price point. Frock and Fril’s black Partner in Shine Dress and emerald Cabaret Soiree Dress beg to be worn while you dance the night away. Accessorize with bling-tastic earrings like Lilou Chandeliers by Ben-Amun by Isaac Manevitz that would rival any of the chandeliers in Gatsby’s mansion. A Deepa Gurnani Crystal Loop Headband would make even Daisy jealous, and the Viva la Diva Heels from Betsey Johnson Footwear are worthy of attention should you find yourself dancing on top of a table. Charleston lessons sold separately.

  1. I love this whole collection! And I loved the movie, and the book; it’s one of the few books I’ve read more than once. I do love Autumn and I like the transition from Summer to Autumn, it’s just the Winter that follows it that always trips me up. For me, that’s when the party stops. But luckily we’ve got the holidays to brighten it all up again!

  2. That’s a pretty apt comparison! Without the death and destruction and self-centered rich people. 😉
I love the look of flapper style, just not on me. If I’d lived in that era, I would have made a pretty unstylish woman (not having that boyish body, looking horrible with close-cropped hair, etc.)
But who can resist all that shimmer?!

  3. Baz is my favorite filmmaker and Gatsby was a great movie. I’ve been to the actual house that Fitzgerald was inspired to write about!
