Thoughts on the 30 Day Green Smoothie Challenge

If you’re following me on Instagram, you may have noticed that April was full of smoothie pics. That’s because I was participating in the 30-Day Green Smoothie Challenge from Simple Green Smoothies. The challenge is simple. You drink one green smoothie a day for 30 days. That’s it. You can still eat whatever you want, whenever you want. The goal of the challenge is to start filling your body with good things and see if you naturally stop craving the junk food you normally reach for.

Every week, Simple Green Smoothies sends out an email with a shopping list and recipes, which makes planning for the next week easy. At first, I wanted to try all the recipes, but I eventually settled on a favorite and made it repeatedly.

I rarely eat fast food and try to eat organic and gluten-free food as much as possible, but I’m not much of a salad eater. So, I was curious to see if drinking one green smoothie a day would make a difference.

I was a little disappointed that my midday energy slumps did not disappear. While there were days I could convince myself that my skin was glowing, my daily shot of spinach did not prevent the occasional breakout.

However, there was an unexpected win from doing the 30-Day Green Smoothie Challenge, and it’s huge for me. I have terrible allergies and pretty much live on Zyrtec all year long. As much as I love spring, it’s the worst season for me. I usually miss the trees flowering because I’m curled up in bed feeling miserable. But, I didn’t get sick last month. The occasional itchy throat and runny nose never turned into anything worse. I suppose it could be coincidence, but I’m pretty sure the daily green smoothies worked.

Now that the challenge is over, I don’t think I’ll have a smoothie every day but definitely a few times a week. And, whenever I start to feel the least bit poorly, I’m reaching for a green smoothie!

The next 30-Day Green Smoothie Challenge doesn’t start until July, but you can still make yourself a yummy green smoothie in the meantime. This Pineapple Banana Smoothie is my favorite and is adapted from one of the recipes from Simple Green Smoothies.

1 cup spinach

1 cup water

1 frozen banana

1 cup frozen pineapple chunks

almond milk as needed

First, blend the water and spinach together. Then add the banana and pineapple, and add the almond milk as needed so that everything blends smoothly. Pour into a tall glass and enjoy.

  3. Huh. I normally shy away from anything “green smoothie” ish, but I like the idea that you drink one a day in addition to whatever you might eat rather than being restricted to things. Also super intrigued that you didn’t get allergies! YAY!

  7. What a fantastic outcome to experience regarding your allergies. It makes me wonder if that connection (heavy consumption of greens and such as a way to combat seasonal allergies) is one that science should be focusing more heavily on.

  8. Pretty cool they helped with your allergies! I like smoothies but unfortunately don’t have them too often. So I’m excited to hear green smoothies don’t just have to be vegetables!
