Behind the Scenes of Pageant Weekend

This summer I’ve been sharing my pageant prep, so naturally, I have to tell you how the pageant went. Of course, if you’ve been following me on Instagram, you already know the ending…

Behind the scenes of pageant weekend…

Contestants stayed at Hilton Columbus at Easton, a beautiful hotel with terrible parking. It’s conveniently located within the Easton Town Center, which is packed with awesome stores I didn’t have time to shop. The hotel is currently under renovation, so the gym and pool were closed. Bummer. A microwave was not included in the room and the mini fridge was super tiny. And, the elevator was a bit of a walk from my room, which is a pain when you are carting around a lot of luggage. However, my room was clean and full of sunlight, which is something I can’t say about a lot of hotels I’ve stayed at. If you stay here, definitely spring for the rooms with the special elevator and save up for valet parking.

Friday…

Friday night, contestants met up at KDB for a night of food, games, and awards. I was so excited to receive an award for Best What Makes Me Captivating and won a beautiful gold necklace and matching earrings. I’m not much of a game person, but I had fun exploring KDB’s game section and doing my best to win tickets. My hand eye coordination is not what it used to be…

Saturday…

Saturday was a long but fun day. The morning started with orientation, where we were given info about the rest of the weekend. There was lots of laughter, and the morning ended with a contestant gift exchange. We had 10 seconds to grab three random gifts, and I snagged a cute snowglobe, a very pretty earring and necklace set, and the most delicious smelling blueberry soap.

Saturday afternoon was filled with rehearsals for the opening number, walking patterns for the different events, and staging for awards. Due to injuries, I’m not much of a dancer anymore, and while my back was on fire by the end of the day, it was fun hanging out with the other girls. Rehearsal is always a great time for bonding and laughing over your inability to pop your hip on the right beat.

Sunday…

Sunday was competition day. My interview was at 8:35 a.m., so this night owl had to get up at 6 a.m. Miraculously, I was awake and coherent and had a great time talking to the judges. After interview, I joined another contestant for breakfast at her hotel and had a wonderful time talking to her about her pageant experiences. She’s an incredible woman with so many awesome pageant stories.

After packing up the hotel room, it was back to the theatre for a final dress rehearsal and the competition. When it comes to competing in pageants, the best advice you can follow is to have fun. My night wasn’t perfect. At one point, my sash fell off, and I had to hold it up while I continued to model a look. Things happen and the best thing you can do is laugh and carry on. In the weeks leading up to the pageant, I had been dreading the final question, so when I nailed my answer, I knew I could be proud of myself no matter what the results were.

So, you might be wondering how I did, and I can tell you no one was more shocked than I was when my name was announced as the new Ms. Captivating. I’ve competed in a handful of pageants off and on for the last 10 years, so to win my first national title was a very sweet moment. Seeing my mom in the audience and getting to share this moment with her was truly special.

I can’t wait to see what the year ahead brings.

  1. Congratulations!! I’m glad you had fun, too. We’ve been waiting for this post and it came out perfect. Absolutely love the last picture!

  2. Congratulations for being Ms Captivating, you look great! So sweet that your mom was there with you! The hotel room must have been far from the elevator, no oven, etc, but yes it looks good! Very nice experience, indeed!

  3. Awwww, congrats! I was following along on Instagram, but I hoped you’d have a recap just the same. I love that you went to breakfast with another contestant and shared stories. I wondered if the pageant would be all competition and no camaraderie, but it sounds like lots of fun and laughs. What a proud moment for your mama!
