Glossies Made Me Do It: Oprah’s Year of Adventure

It’s the start of a new year and a new blog series! I’m joining forces with Erika of Cat Eyes & Skinny Jeans and Lauren of Shooting Stars Mag to bring you Glossies Made Me Do It, a year of our favorite magazines and what we learned from them. Books, beauty, food, you name it – it’s all fair game in our new series.

Oprah's declaring 2017 her year of adventure! Here's how I'm going to make my life more adventurous. Plus, I'm sharing my oatmeal cookie oatmeal recipe!

Since it’s January, I’ve been pouring over O, The Oprah Magazine and taking notes on the issue’s recommendations for the start of the new year. The article I kept coming back to is Oprah’s “This Land Was Made for You and Me”. Oprah has declared 2017 her Year of Adventure. She started off her adventures at the Grand Canyon and is encouraging others to find their adventurous spirit starting by visiting national parks.

I’m not really an outdoors person, but her article got me thinking about my theme for the year and how I can be more adventurous.

If last year was The Year of Small Wins, this is the year of simplifying my life and focusing on what’s truly important to me. (I’m still deciding on my word for the year. Simple? Minimalism? Focus?) I’m imagining 2017 as the year of decluttering and downsizing, of blogging less but putting more of myself into the posts I do publish. I want to spend my life in the real world and not behind a computer screen. I want to like the life I’m living and the clothes I’m wearing, and the things I’m doing.

But, back to adventure. The January issue of O shows that you don’t have to go far and away to find adventure. In fact it might be something as simple as trying a dip-powder manicure, making a new recipe for supper (like Oprah’s Turkey Lasagna Recipe), or picking up a book you wouldn’t normally read (like Novels, Tales, Journeys: The Complete Prose of Alexander Pushkin).

Here are a few things I want to do make my year adventurous:

♥ Embrace multiple products and try a Korean Skincare Routine

♥ Grow out my bangs (I’ve had them my entire life, and it’s time to give the no bang look a try)

♥ Blog less but put more thought into each post. Quality over quantity.

♥ Write an ebook

♥ Open an Etsy shop

♥ Travel to Chicago, Canada, and/or NYC

♥ Take a fitness class

♥ Make time for things I keep putting off (like learning calligraphy and how to make a pinhole camera)

♥ Make a short film

♥ Pay off at least one bill (#financialfreedom)

All this talk of adventure and trying new things has me craving comfort food, and nothing is better than starting off a wintry day with a hot bowl of oatmeal. This is one of my quick and easy go-to recipes, and it’s inspired by oatmeal cookies!

Oatmeal Cookie Oatmeal

Prep Time: 1 minute

Cook Time: 2 minutes

Total Time: 3 minutes

  • 1/2 cup oats
  • 2/3 cup water

  • cinnamon
  • maple syrup
  • almond milk

  1. In a bowl, combine oats and water. Add a couple spoonfuls of raisins and walnuts then sprinkle with cinnamon.
  2. Microwave 2 minutes.
  3. Give the oatmeal a stir. Add almond milk to taste. (I like my oatmeal drowning in almond milk.) Drizzle with maple syrup.

  1. Oatmeal Cookie Oatmeal..yes!!! I love your adventure list. We live 2 hours from Chicago so I love going there and I am actually going to Canada this year. I have read O’s magazine since Day one…love it!! Happy New Year beautiful..let the adventures begin!

  2. So many great ideas here! I have never been to the Grand Canyon surprisingly! You will love Chicago and NYC if you haven’t been before. I haven’t been to Canada, but would love to see it, too. I’ve wanted to write an e-book and start an Etsy shop for awhile now. Congrats on so many great goals!

  3. We both went with Oprah – I’m so curious about those manicures too. Love all of your goals for 2017. Based one the things you want to do, I think Focus would make a great 2017 word for you! I’m not looking to write an e-book this year, but I AM hoping to write/edit the book I’m currently working on because I do want to be a published author someday and I need to find more time for personal writing.

  4. What a pretty planner! Is that a Happy Planner? 🙂 Good luck on achieving your goals for 2017. My biggest goal for 2017 is to be grateful for all that I have, and save enough money to hopefully move to a bigger place sometime in 2017 or 2018! 🙂

  5. So many great goals this year!!!!! I never had bangs; I wish I could grow some bangs how exciting. I can’t wait to read your ebook and check out your Etsy Shop.

  6. I liked this O! Year of Adventure stuff, and I liked your plans as well! About blogging, the bangs (I am also a firm bangs’ believer 🙂 and an e-book and so on, really great plans! I think you will accomplish all if you really really want then, and the trips to NYC and Canada sound great! Well, if I start telling my adventures, people will call me crazy. It’s not that I am the most adventures person, but I have had some that would make a book 🙂 Hope you have a great weekend!

  7. Cheers to new adventures in 2017! I would love to try a Korean Skincare Routine; and I so hear you on the no bangs thing. I constantly contemplate growing mine out, but I think I’d feel naked without them. Haha!

  8. Love this! I think the most adventurous thing I’ve done in 2016 was to create my blog, and I plan on improving my content this year! Love the idea of using a Korean skincare routine, would definitely give this a try <3

  9. I had oatmeal for breakfast! It totally kept me satisfied until lunch. That’s awesome.
I had bangs but grew them out when I was 16. I haven’t had them since. I think you’re someone who looks good with them, and would without too!

  10. Love your travel goals – I’m going to Alaska this year and am very excited! I also love the blog less, but quality over quantity. I stepped back quite a bit last year and it’s been wonderful. More time to live, which gives me more things to write about.
