Two days in Stratford, Ontario

Back in May, I mentioned that I really wanted to use my passport this summer and visit Canada. Since my brother and I didn’t have to work Labor Day weekend, we decided to take a road trip to Stratford, Ontario.

Stratford is about four hours away from where we live and is home to the Stratford Festival, which stages Shakespeare plays as well as modern productions.

Our first stop was the Festival Theatre where we caught the matinee performance of Twelfth Night. The set is minimal, but the costumes are elaborate with an Elizabethan/rock’n’roll/18th Century vibe. Plus, there’s a very cool use of water bowls that were placed throughout the stage and played by the fool.

After the show, we walked around downtown Stratford. There are a lot of cute shops and places to eat on Ontario Street. However, it took a while to find a place to eat since the restaurants were filled with tourists just out of the matinee or waiting for the evening performances.

We eventually grabbed a table at Boar’s Head Pub, which is attached to the Queen’s Inn. I opted for shepherd’s pie while my brother went with the classic fish and chips. It was all really good.

We spent the night at the Festival Inn, which is only a few minutes from the theatres. I used Travelocity to book our stay, and was able to get a small discount that way. Breakfast is complimentary, and the dining area is nice.

After breakfast on Sunday, we walked around town again. We had lunch at Downie Street Burgers. While service was slow, the Black Swan Burger and Maple Bacon Poutine were delicious. They, also, have gluten-free options available.

We wrapped up our Stratford stay with the Guys and Dolls matinee. This show is fabulous. It, also, is performed at the Festival Theatre, but the stage was completely redone, giving the theatre a very different feel. Guys and Dolls is not one of my favorite movie musicals, but this show is awesome in person. The singing and dancing are spot on, and after the show, you could hear people humming and whistling songs from the show.

We had a fun weekend away, and the Stratford Festival productions are definitely worth a road trip. Plus, I got to cross another item off my summer bucket list!

  10. This looks like an adorable little trip! Lots of good food and entertainment- nothing beats that while on a mini-vacation! I’ve never seen the movie or live show of Guys and Dolls. I’m glad you enjoyed it!

  11. No! I’ve never been! Sounds like you had a great time and Loved your photos (they’re making me hungry!). Some time away is always appreciated, eh?

  12. I’ve been to Stratford several times. My mom and her girlfriends used to go every year for a shopping and theatre getaway. I also took my AP English class five years or so ago, and we also saw Twelfth Night. They’d turned it into a musical, and the kids just loved it. I appreciate your dining recommendations because I feel like I’ve always struck out with food on my visits. I’ll keep your tips in mind for our next trip!

  13. This is so funny, my favorite artist is based out of Stratford, and I just heard about this festival this summer! I was working an event and a teacher there recommended it to me (out of the blue!) I am pinning this for later, because I hope to make it happen someday. Maybe next summer. I wish we could drive, but for us it would be a looong one! So glad you had a great time and enjoyed the shows. Guys and Dolls is such a fun classic. 🙂 XO – Alexandra
