The Stories Behind My Instagram Top 9

I’m always intrigued to see what pictures do well on Instagram. It never makes any sense to me. When I saw Rachel of A Nesting Nomad’s post on the stories behind her Instagram top 9, I was inspired to write my own.Β I use Instagram more like a virtual scrapbook rather than a curated feed on a theme, so I don’t have the biggest following. However, I’m always mildly amused by which pics get the love and which ones don’t. Here are the stories behind my very eclectic Instagram top 9.

I'm always intrigued to see what pictures do well on Instagram. It never makes any sense to me. When I saw Rachel of A Nesting Nomad's post on the stories behind her Instagram top 9, I was inspired to write my own.

#9 – The one with the cute bag

There really isn’t a story behind this pic, but who doesn’t like this adorable ticket bag from ipsy? I think I posted pics of all my ipsy bags, but this is the one the people of Instagram loved the best. You can see my review of the pictured April ipsy bag here.

#8 – The one at the race

As Ms. Captivating 2017, I participated in some community events like the VA 2K Walk & Roll. It wasn’t the most organized or fun race that I’ve done, but there was a real sense of pride among the walkers. The event wasn’t promoted very well, which is a shame since VA services are important to veterans and need to be part of a wider community discussion.

#7 – The one with cute shoes

Outfit selfies proved to be rather popular, which I find hilarious since picture-wise they aren’t that great. However, I really like this plaid top from Stitch Fix #5, and I’m still a little bummed that these gladiator sandals didn’t work out.

#6 – The one with the green top

This is the first professional pic to make it into my top nine and is one of my official Ms. Captivating headshots. The photoshoot with my sister queens was fun and included a day of dressing up and eating decadent cupcakes. The emerald top is my pick from my first Stitch Fix, and I have to say that it does look good in photos.

#5 – The one with the jacket

Oh, look! It’s another Stitch fix find. The faux suede jacket is from Stitch Fix #4, and the photo was promoting being a co-host for Thursday Fashion Files. I really like this look, but I must confess that most days I’m in leggings or jeans and a tee. Working from home has not been good for my fashion sense.

#4 – The one with the chambray shirt

I like doing style challenges every now and then, and this was my final look for theΒ SAHM Casual Wardrobe Capsule Builder challenge. Pictured is the Old Navy chambray shirt I wore to death and the Vera Bradley tote I picked up at the annual outlet sale.

#3 – The one with the cookie

This pic is from another photoshoot, and it’s one of my favorites. My pageant coach had suggested doing a few blog related photos since we had time to try different looks. My bangs were teased back into a roll for a vintage vibe, and I grabbed one of my favorite books and my big dorky glasses. My coach provided me with a cookie, and the shot was complete.

#2 – The one with the M*A*S*H tee

This final outfit selfie was snapped before running out the door for a baseball game with a M*A*S*H theme. The tee is from AmazonΒ and is great for any M*A*S*H events you may have on your calendar. Interestingly, the pics I posted from the game did not get the Instagram love, which leads me to believe that perhaps it’s the tee that the people love.

#1 – The one with the clothes rack

It’s beyond me why this pic from a wardrobe fitting got the most love. It was a Sunday afternoon, and I was waiting for the wardrobe ladies to get to me. There was some to do because my “family” wasn’t there yet, so outfits couldn’t be decided on until the others came. Funnily enough, wardrobe only ended up providing me with a tank (from Target!), which I wore with my own denim jacket, black jeans, and black ballet flats. Here’s the crazy thing about that day… every time production approved my looks and said I could leave they’d change their mind and want to see what else I had brought. This happened maybe three times. I came with a garmentΒ bag full of stuff, but since wardrobe had to keep everything that was under consideration, I left wearing the only three pieces they didn’t want – a top, jean skirt, and sandals. Lesson #1: Always bring more than you think you’ll need to a wardrobe fitting. Lesson #2: Wash everything first. The black jeans I wore in the commercial were what I wore to the fitting because they were a little faded and dirty and all my nice, clean clothes were in the garment bag. Of course, I’d be stuck in those jeans for two days of filming. Lol.

  1. I didn’t even bother posting my top 9 from 2017. They were almost all the photos I posted at the veeeery beginning of the year when I was like, 38 weeks pregnant and realized I hadn’t posted hardly any photos of me pregnant. So I shared a week of maternity photos.

On the one hand, I get why those are popular. When I was pregnant, I really wanted inspiration for maternity outfits too, and a lot of them had stuff from Le Tote, so for those two reasons I can see why that got different people beyond who just follows my feed. On the one hand, it was not representative of my life in 2017 at all (my baby was born in late January so it was new baby land here all year), and, yeah, I’m his mom but- Ellis is one of the cutest babies! He’s got cheeks for days! Ithink I was expecting a top nine of him….. lol. He was in, like, one picture.

I do like your top nine ones. Like, the race- that was a rather big deal, wasn’t it? I remember you really training for it! And the professional photos were too! Also noticing how often STitch Fix is in your most popular photos. I think that’s the power of a hashtag, plus SF seems to cultivate a community/cult following (like the way movies have cult followings. Not everyone knows about it but if you do, you are into it). What were your favorite 9 instagram photos this year?

    1. I haven’t really thought about my favorite pics from last year, but the ones that made my top 9 were not the ones I was expecting, lol.

  2. So fun to hear the stories behind the top nine. What a great idea for a post. I have to say your Stitch Fixes look awesome on you – plus you are super photogenic!

  3. This is such a great idea for a post. I really need to look and see what my top posts are. I’m sure there would be no reason to make up why they’re the most popular, too! lol! My favorite is the one of you in the green top!

  4. It’s fascinating to read the stories behind your pictures – often you don’t get the full story, even with a picture caption. it’s nice to read more πŸ™‚

I couldn’t do this with my top 9 – all outfits so pretty boring, haha!

Hope you had a great weekend. The heatwave continued here unfortunately, so it was another fairly quiet and aircon filled weekend for us!

  5. What a fun post! So many people do the best nine and we don’t really know what was going on in each one. I like hearing more detail!

  6. Yay I’m glad you did your version of this post! I love hearing the stories behind people’s instagrams, it’s usually not quite what you think it might be! I love your outfit in no7, I own zero plaid and I think I need to fix that. I also don’t own any fancy sandals so that might go on the list too! I am fascinated by the story behind no1. Looking into other people’s working lives is totally fascinating to me. Thank you for sharing!
