BookSparks Fall Reading Challenge: Venetian Blood

The university themed BookSparks Fall Reading Challenge continues with a study abroad selection, Christine Evelyn Volker's mystery, Venetian Blood.

It’s senior year of the BookSparks Fall Reading Challenge! We started off with The Cottingley Secret by Hazel Gaynor then followed it up with Glennon Doyle’s popular memoir, Love Warrior, Ali Land’s thriller, Good Me Bad Me, and Kris Radish’s Western, A Dangerous Woman from Nowhere. For extra credit, we are venturing abroad with Christine Evelyn Volker’s mystery, Venetian Blood.

From the Amazon:

Struggling to forget a crumbling marriage, forty-year-old Anna Lucia Lottol comes to Venice to visit an old friend―but instead of finding solace, she is dragged into the police station and accused of murdering a money-laundering count with whom she had a brief affair. A US Treasury officer with brains and athleticism, Anna fights to clear her name in a seductive city full of watery illusions. As she works to pry information from a cast of recalcitrant characters sometimes denying what she sees and hears, she succeeds in unleashing a powerful foe bent on destroying her. Will she save herself and vanquish her enemies, including her darkest fears?

A mysterious tapestry of murder, betrayal, and family, Venetian Blood is a story of one woman’s brave quest for the truth ―before it’s too late.

My thoughts on Venetian Blood

Anna is being blackmailed by a man she would rather keep in her past, Count Sergio Corrin. When Sergio is murdered on the same night Anna tries to confront him at a party, Anna becomes the prime suspect. Can she trust any of her new acquaintances in this city of secrets?

The premise sounds thrilling, but for me, the book fell flat. The writing never grabbed me, and the story couldn’t hold my attention. This isn’t a poorly written book, but it’s not a book I could fall into. I didn’t care about any of the characters, and the mystery crawled at a snails pace. However, it currently has over four stars on Amazon and Goodreads, so I am clearly in the minority here. If you are in the mood for a murder mystery set in Venice, this just might be the book you’re looking for.
